The 2011 Road Tour Season Begins: From Mid-America to North of the Border
The Fleetwood Country Cruize-in Tour begins at a Memorial Day weekend street rod tradition and then we head north to the largest special interest vehicle show in Canada. For street rodders in the Midwest the Memorial Day weekend has meant an annual pilgrimage to the NSRA Mid-America Nationals plus in Springfield, Missouri. This kick-off to the summer rod run season has grown to a gathering of over 2,000 special interest vehicles over the past few years. The long Memorial Day weekend is perfect for folks to make the trip from farther away and it is also the perfect place to debut our hot '55 Chevy and to start a summer of Road Tour fun.
In Springfield the fun begins on Thursday evening, May 26th at the headquarters of ANPAC, the folks who offer the Chrome specialty car insurance program. The folks at Chrome put on a great Thursday evening get together last year in Springfield and are anxious to welcome everyone back again this year. We will be debuting our hot '55 Chevy at the party. Make sure to get to town early as this will be a perfect way to start off the weekend.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be busy at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds in Springfield as participants and spectators will fill the grounds all weekend for the NSRA Mid-America Nationals plus. This is always a good event with plenty to see and do for everyone. At the conclusion of the awards on Sunday afternoon it will be time to begin our trip north on the Fleetwood Country Cruize-in Road Tour.
We will spend Sunday evening in Fenton, Missouri just south of St. Louis. Monday morning May 30th we will take a tour of the Gateway Arch and Park in downtown St Louis. This historic landmark has become a signature part of the St Louis skyline. For lunch we have been invited to be a featured attraction at the Rib America Festival in downtown St Louis. By 1 PM it will be time to head east to our Monday evening destination of Indianapolis.
Tuesday morning we will make a stop at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Indianapolis 500 and the Speedway Museum will be a great place to get a look at the long history of that famous event. Tuesday afternoon we are going to stop in Auburn, Indiana for a tour of the Auburn, Cord and Duesenberg Museum. Tuesday evening we will arrive in Dearborn, Michigan.
Wednesday is a full day as we will visit the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. For those who have already enjoyed the Museum there is also the opportunity to take a tour of the famous River Rouge Ford Assembly plant. By mid-afternoon it will be time to cross into Canada and make our way to London, Ontario where we will be staying at the headquarters hotel for the Fleetwood Country Cruize-in. Thursday we have a day trip planned to the Halton County Radial Railway. This facility is home to an amazing collection of trolley cars, buses and electric railcars that show the various modes of mass transit from Canada's past. The folks at the museum have gone out of their way to welcome us and we will be getting a very special tour of the entire collection. For more info see their website at www.hcry.com . After our visit to the Radial Railway we will head back to London where we will be getting a personal tour from Steve Plunkett of his amazing collection of classic vehicles at his Fleetwood Farms estate. Thursday evening we will be part of the weekly Lion's Club cruise at Fleetwood Farms.
Friday we will make the 90-minute drive to the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum. They have a huge collection of vintage military aircraft that has served Canada from prior to World War II to the present day. With over forty planes on display there is plenty to see. After our visit at the aviation museum we will journey back to London to get ready for Friday evening and the Beach Boys concert at the Fleetwood Farms event site.
Saturday the Fleetwood Country Cruize-in kicks off as almost 3,000 special interest vehicles cover the 100 acre Fleetwood Farm estate with all of the proceeds going to charity. Over $350,000 was raised last year. Celebrities who are scheduled to appear are George Barris and Gene Winfield Saturday evening there is a catered dinner concert with Lighthouse, the famous Canadian band from the 1970's. Sunday the fun continues and special awards are given out at the afternoon ceremonies.
