The NHRA Motorsports Museum Tour: A 20th California Reunion
Art Morrison Chassis, Fife, WA, to NHRA California Hot Rod Reunion, Bakersfield, CA
The Wally Parks NHRA Motorsport Museum in Pomona pays tribute to the men and women that were instrumental in making our hobby what it is today. It tells the story of the early years of street rodding and how it became the huge sport that it is today. For the last 20 years the museum and it's staff have joined with folks from across the country as they gather at Famoso Raceway just north of Bakersfield and celebrate the colorful history of hot rodding. The California Hot Rod Reunion has been a popular AMSOIL/Street Rodder Road Tour destination for the last few years. This year we will help the NHRA Museum celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Reunion as we travel from the headquarters of Morrison Chassis in Fife, Washington near Tacoma and travel south to Bakersfield, California to be part of the festivities.
Our adventures start on Saturday October 15 as we take a tour of the Tacoma area that will include a look at the progress on what will be known as The LeMay - America's Car Museum. This amazing facility is under construction now and scheduled to be open in May of 2012. Saturday evening Art and Craig Morrison will be our hosts as we tour the facilities of Morrison Enterprises in Fife, Washington where the chassis for our 1955 Road Tour Chevy was constructed. It will be an evening of fun and food with the Morrison folks in Fife.
Sunday morning we will be up and rolling south as we are the guests of honor at a huge car show in Portland, Oregon at the headquarters of the Hoffman Group and their many street rod related companies. As the car show winds down just after noon we will make the beautiful drive to Bend, Oregon. With Mount Hood in the distance the trip to Bend will include some breathtaking scenery. In Bend we will visit with folks in the area's huge street rodding community including members of the Line Chasers Car Club. Bend was the destination for many rodders who relocated from Southern California over the past few decades.
Monday the drive through the beautiful Oregon countryside continues as we cruise through the Crater Lake National Park region and make our way to Grants Pass, Oregon. Grants Pass has been the home of Bob Drake Reproductions for many years . Bob and the team at Drakes have been hard at work on a major project and their complete 1940 Ford Coupe bodies are ready to go. We are excited as a Drake 40 Ford coupe body will be the basis for our 2012 Road Tour car. It is sure to be an interesting evening at Bob Drake Reproductions.
Tuesday the scenic beauty continues as we make our way to the Northern California coastline and travel south on historic Highway 101 as it makes its way through the Redwood National Park. The drive will be fantastic and our destination for the evening is Zane Cullen's Cotati Speed Shop facilities in Santa Rosa. Zane and his team always have some interesting projects in the works. On Wednesday we will continue on Highway 101 and visit Sausalito and then travel across the Golden Gate Bridge and southward. Wednesday evening we will be in the picturesque Monterey - Carmel area.
At this point we will have seen some amazing scenery but Thursday will include a trip along what is always ranked as one of the most beautiful drives in the world- the Pacific Coast Highway between Monterey and Cambria. This is consistently one of the most popular parts of any of our west coast Road Tours. From Cambria we head inland and arrive in Bakersfield by Thursday evening. The 20th California Hot Rod Reunion kicks off on Friday and we will have a hospitality tent right in the middle of the action all weekend.
