Sherm's Custom Plating Tour
September 30-October 9
Los Angeles, CA, to NSRA Golden State Nationals, Sacramento, CA
The Sherm's Custom Plating Tour has become one of the most popular Road Tours of the season over the last few years. Sherm's president Gary Matranga always manages to plan some great visits and stops during the week on the Tour. When you are in the custom plating business you get to know quit a few folks in our hobby. Coupled with the fact that Gary has been part of the hot rod scene in California for many, many years, he is able to get us into some pretty cool places.
This year the Sherm's Custom Plating Tour starts right where hot rodding had it's roots: Los Angeles, California. On Friday September 30 we will visit the shop of legend Jerry Kugel. Jerry has been a part of our hobby for many years and is known for his independent front and rear suspension products, the Muroc series of roadsters, and also for going very fast at Bonneville. Jerry and his family are great folks who enjoy all facets of our hobby. Friday evening we will get together at Hollywood Hot Rods in Burbank. Troy Ladd and his crew will already be working on our 2012 AMSOIL/Street Rodder Road Tour 40 Ford coupe that utilizes a Bob Drake body on a Fatman chassis. Friday evening is just a warm up for what's to come over the weekend.
Saturday we will get an extended look at one of the finest automobile collections in the world. The Nethercutt Museum has an amazing group of classic autos from the golden era of vehicles and coupled with the other items in the museum it will be a full morning at the Neathercutt. In the afternoon on Saturday we will get a look at the private car collection of Galpin Auto Sports . While Galpin is a name that has been well know in Southern California automotive circles for decades, they have in recent years amassed an amazing collection of significant rods and customs. Their extensive automobilia collection compliments the vehicles. The collection is not open to the public but they are anxious for the Road Tour participants to stop by and take a look at their treasures. Saturday evening will be spent enjoying the sites of the fabled city of Burbank.
On Sunday Oct 2 we will be gathering at Hollywood Hot Rods and cruising as a group to the Long Beach Motorama. Sunday afternoon we make the climb up and over the famous Grapevine Hill and spend Sunday evening in Bakersfield. Monday it is on to Fresno where we will get a look at John Lawson's incredible collection of 1932 Fords. John's new facility is the perfect showcase for his collection of Deuces. Monday afternoon we will visit a hot rod upholstery shop in Fresno that has been around since the early 1950's and has a basement full of vintage parts that is mind boggling. Monday evening we will be special guests at a party at Wheel Vintiques headquarters. Mike Stallings and his family and crew really enjoy our visits and Wheel Vintiques has been the office wheel supplier to the Road Tour for many years.
Tuesday we get back to nature as we visit the Yosemite National Park area and spend a night it that beautiful section of California. Wednesday we will visit historic Virginia City and then stay in Lake Tahoe for the evening. Thursday we make the scenic drive across Route 50 to Sacramento. There we will tour Sherm's Custom Plating facilities and settle in for a wild weekend at the NSRA Golden State Nationals plus at the fairgrounds.
