Sherm’s Custom Plating Tour off to great start
by Jerry Dixey
The largest AMSOIL/ Street Rodder Road Tour in history got a great start today in sunny Southern California. With 100 registered vehicles the Sherm’s Custom Plating Road Tour is going to be a huge freight train of street rods all headed for the SEMA Show in Las Vegas.
Activities got started at the Neathercutt Collection and Museum in Sylmar California as folks gathered to get their credentials, itineraries for the week, goodie bags and Road Tour hats. About 70 of the 100 registered vehicles arrived at noon and filled the parking lot with some great looking cars.
After a look at the fantastic car collection on display in one of the two large buildings it was time for a tour of the Neathercutt Collection. The Collection is housed in a four story building that is filled with an amazing array a treasure. The basement holds a wide variety of automobiles, music boxes and china. The second floor is indescribable as you walk into a setting that was built to look like a luxurious automobile showroom from the 1920′s. The classic vehicles on display are all perfectly restored and represent the Golden Age of automobile production.
The next floor held fine furniture more music boxes and statues. The third floor was the music room where we were treated to a concert played on one of the largest Wurlitzer organs in the world. The walls were lined with orchesterals which are huge music devices from Europe that entertained folks in the early part of the 19th century. The two hour tour at the Neathercutt Collection was breathtaking.
Next up was a visit to Galpin Auto Sports in Van Nuys. G.A.S. is part of the Galpin family of auto dealerships including the largest Ford dealership on the planet. We were greeted by Dave Shuten who heads up the custom vehicle collection for G.A.S The vehicles on display includes the largest group of Ed Roth vehicles anywhere. Tools from Von Dutch’s shop and some very rare Mustangs. Pasta and salads were enjoyed by everyone. We made a short walk to see Dave’s workshop and saw some projects that are in the works. It was a great wrap up to a great first say on the Sherm’s Custom Plating Tour. Stay tuned. We are just getting started.
