31st Shades of the Past Hot Rod Roundup
by Jerry Dixey
The Vintage Air Road Tour arrived in Pigeon Forge on Thursday afternoon as planned. Our destination when we left Vintage Air headquarters in San Antonio, Texas was the Shades of the Past Hot Rod Roundup. This event has become one of the premier hot rod events in the nation. It is known for the quality of the vehicles in attendance and the prizes and awards that are given out over the two days of the event. The move to Dollywood Splash Park three years ago succeeded in taking the level of the event up a number of notches. With added room in all areas the vendor spaces were expanded, the swap meet area grew and all of the participant vehicles were parked on pavement. The vehicles that were chosen for the prestigious Top Twenty-Five recognition and the other special award winners are now displayed in the Splash Park water falls area. It is a great place for everyone to get a chance to see the winners close up on Saturday.
It was a fantastic two days at the Hot Rod Round Up. Picture perfect weather brought spectators out in droves. We posed for a group picture on Friday and John Young was announced as the winner of the the Golden Shine Award for the trip.
The official awards began Saturday at 4:30 in the Splash Park. The owners of the award winning vehicles were introduced to the huge crowd. Special recognition was give to a number of vehicles from the Top 25. Cincinnati, Ohio resident Bob Oney was awarded the Top Street Rod title with his stunning 1940 Ford Woodie. The awards wrapped up with a lucky fellow walking away with $25,000 as his share of the 50/50 drawing. The Alloway built 32 Roadster was given away by random drawing of all of the registered participants.
The Vintage Air Road Tour participants headed off on different directions by Saturday evening. It had been yet another great week on the AMSOIL/Street Rodder Road Tour. Rick Love from Vintage Air put together an amazing week of fun and excitement.
